I hate that I have to write this post, but it has become a necessity:
- Do NOT wire ANY money as part of a mystery shopping assignment.
- If you EVER receive a large check as part of a mystery shopping assignment, DO NOT DEPOSIT IT. The check is fake. The people who sent you the check are trying to steal your money.
Over the past two months, someone has been posing as MysteryShopOnline.com, and attempting to scam people out of their hard earned money — by tricking them into depositing a fake check and then wiring a portion of the money back.
This makes me incredibly frustrated and sad. Many people have lost several thousand dollars each. And the problem does is not going away, despite the fact that two such thieves were recently arrested in Canada. Update: I appear to have created quite the stir! The DVD is getting a lot of positive reviews. Read the comments for yourself, and let me know what you think! Maybe the Gold DVD is worth it for you?
I have been involved in the mystery shopping world for around three years now. In that time, I have talked to a lot of very experienced mystery shoppers. Some of them were proponents of getting certified by the MSPA, and some said it was definitely not worth it.
But with the release of the NEW Gold Certification DVD, I whole-heartedly believe that you should NOT order it. I have two main reasons:
1. It costs you one hundred dollars of your hard earned money, but it will do nothing in terms of actually getting you better assignments. If you want to learn more about mystery shopping, then the absolutely BEST way to do that is to go out and complete an assignment. Instead of costing you money, you might actually make a little bit. Update: It appears that getting certified does help you get more assignments. However, it is not clear that Gold Certification does. Last week I was inundated with reports that someone was perpetrating a check-cashing scam under the guise of MysteryShopOnline.com. Several of my subscribers reported losing thousands of dollars, and many more reported that they had been contacted by the scammer in some way.
I reported the situation to the FBI. Apparently check-fraud is a severe problem, costing as much as $8 billion dollars a year.
Here’s what you can do: If you lost money, or if you were contacted by someone attempting to scam you please send a report to the IC3, which is a divison of the FBI. Do that here: http://www.ic3.gov.
Also, please DO call your local FBI agency. And if you have lost money, please file a report with your local police department.
Remember, never cash a large check as part of a mystery shopping assignment. If you ever have any doubt about whether or not a check is legitimate, call the bank issuing the check and ask. Also, if you do deposit a large check, wait until you can verify with your bank that the funds have been secured before you touch the money.
That’s about all it takes to avoid this scam.
If you are concerned about protecting your social security number, then get an EIN from the IRS. You can do this very quickly over the internet. Its a relatively simple way to protect your identity.
